Barry Rodgers Sunday Service 14/2/21
Something to read and ponder about while dunking a biscuit (that's a "cookie" for my Mericun chums) into a cup of tea on a Sunday.
So, lets get into it...
TIP / OPINION / WHAT I DID
Here's an idea for a side hustle that can be both good fun and turn a bit of a profit.
Mugs.
If you get the design right and it is something that people will want to buy, you can't beat mugs.
T-shirts are OK but then you have sizing and a lot of potential reasons for returns. Mugs are simple. they are the same size, everyone knows how to use one and they make great gifts.
Here is the process I have used to make them and sell them for fun.
Start with the fulfilment firm. Where do you want to sell your mugs?
If you are in the USA and want to ship them there, Printful is a good place to start. It is also great for fulfilling orders in Europe (EU), Japan & Australia too.
The last mug I put out there was only really for UK audiences so I used Inkthreadable which is located inside the UK so the delivery costs were lower for the customers.
So, once you have your account set up it is time to design a mug. Hot trending things can work well for a quick few bucks...
Think about what is going on. This week a lawyer appeared on a Zoom call "as a cat" and said the immortal line with deadpan delivery "I am not a cat" (which is exactly what a cat would say if they were trying to impersonate a lawyer).
So a mug could be a screenshot of the cat looking panicked and that line on the mug. EDIT: as I just wrote that I did a quick search in Etsy and - what would you know? >> people all over it!
I use Stencil to do the designs. It is dead simple and there are loads of icons and graphics built into it to make it easy work. I have a transparent background and an image size of 2362x1062. I put the front and back designs on the left & right of this canvas. When I download the image I make sure that it is 300dpi for printing.
When you have your design, go back to the fulfilment platform you are using and create a product. When you have your product made, you are able to download mug "mock-ups" all done for you.
Next, create a store front for your mugs on Etsy. Under "integrations" you can link your Printful and Inkthreadable accounts.
Create a listing in Etsy for your product using the mock-ups to illustrate your mug. Then connect the Etsy listing to the product in your chosen fulfilment platform. This means, if you put some credit on these accounts, the orders will be processed, created and shipped automatically.
Once that is set up, you are good to go. The next step is getting the word out there.
As you have mock-ups for your mugs, it is easy to find your audience on Facebook and make a quick ad for your mug. I normally pay around 10c a click for this type of ad although that can be less if you have a well defined audience.
Of course, you can drop a link for a mug into relevant groups you belong to as well (as long as it isn't done in a spammy way).
Got a teenager that needs a bit of pocket money? This would be an ideal way to accomplish that while nurturing their creativity & entrepreneurial spirit at the same time.
There. Good advice for a Sunday
