Barry Rodgers - Sunday Service 18/04/21
Dearly Beloved,
Welcome to this week's Sunday Service...
Something to read and ponder about while dunking a biscuit (that's a "cookie" for my Mericun chums) into a cup of tea on a Sunday.
So, lets get into it...
The difference between a coach and a mentor.
It is a fact that people can get some measure of success faster if they have someone coaching them. In almost any endeavour.
But what do people expect from a coach?
One thing that I see is that the person coaching will usually have his or her own set of experiences and will expect students to bend to their philosophy. "My way or the highway" is the order of the day.
Nobody can argue with that, as it is "their way" that brought them the experience and success that people who become students crave.
The problem with that approach is that the student has to be happy with the methods and philosophies that the coach has in order to learn them and enthusiastically apply them from that day on.
I think a lot people walk away from a coaching experience with a sense that they were being expected to do stuff they either didn't enjoy doing enough, didn't think fitted with their circumstances or didn't feel comfortable with. Because the coach is coaching from a set playbook.
So, what is the difference with a mentor?
Well, a mentor is someone who will give advice to a student based on their own path.
They will find out what direction a student wants to take, what their strengths are and where their enthusiasm lies and provide advice accordingly.
Does the mentor need to be doing that themselves?
No.
For example. I don't do much SEO. But if I had someone ask me what they should do if they wanted to go down that route, I would be able to suggest a couple of tools to use and advise on a 90 - 180 day strategy to get the process moving. I would also be able to incorporate audience building strategies to maximise on the traffic.
Would I hold their hand and teach them how to use the tools?
Nope. There are tutorials already made for that.
What I would do is have the student keep me fully appraised of their progress or lack of it on a week by week basis and tweak the strategy if necessary.
A mentor is also the accountability partner - making sure that the person does what he or she says they will do.
If it comes to a specific topic the mentor knows very little about, then their experience in this "industry" should be wide enough to know of an expert who has the best training course on the topic to suggest.
A coach teaches you their method.
A mentor helps you succeed in your method.
Think of that when you get invited on webinars.
There. Good advice for a Sunday
