Barry's Sunday Service - 28/02/21
Something to read and ponder about while dunking a biscuit (that's a "cookie" for my Mericun chums) into a cup of tea on a Sunday.
So, lets get into it...
TIP / OPINION / WHAT I DID
Here is something that has fallen out of fashion a bit. Something that I don't see anything negative about - only positives.
So, I am going to suggest that you consider keeping a Commonplace Book.
Ok. For those of you born after 1980, what is a Commonplace Book?
Traditionally, a Commonplace Book was a notebook where, every day, you jotted down things that you felt it would be a good idea to keep. This could be quotes you'd heard, things you read that interested you, things you had seen (it could even contain sketches), things that had occurred to you, ideas, observations.
They have a rich history.
Some of the earliest Commonplace Books of famous people are available to read today - Take Roman Emporer Marcus Aurelius for example. His 12 volumes of what he called "Meditations" survived and can still be read almost 2000 years after he wrote them.
English natural philosophers John Locke and Isaac Newton were taught to keep them at Oxford University in the 17th century. Similarly, Ralph Waldo Emerson was taught to keep one when he was at Harvard.
Even today there are famous people who keep and use them. English singer Robbie Williams has a book in which he jots down interesting sentences he comes up with and refers back through them when he is writing song lyrics. He reckons he has over 2000 sentences to draw from.
The coolest of all, though, is that Sherlock Holmes keeps and uses them to solve those impossible crimes he is brought in to investigate.
So what are the advantages?
Flicking back through my current book, for my business I see product ideas, things to try, questions I have made a note of to investigate later, niche ideas, traffic ideas...all sorts. These are jumbled up with quotes, things I have learned from whatever I have been reading and odd stuff that I find particularly cool.
So, the advantage is looking back and reminding yourself of these things. keeping things front and centre.
But it is more than that. You can write goals in the back for example. Have a section for writing "what marketing ideas I have discovered today" so you don't lose those things over time..
I imagine there are a whole host of apps or programmes that will do this stuff online but I actually think there is more power in writing it down rather than typing or copy/pasting stuff.
Personally, I take joy in a hand-sized bound notebook and a fountain pen but, whatever tickles your pickle is fine.
It is a habit well worth getting into - for your business and for yourself.
There. Good advice for a Sunday
